Another Use for a Blog
17 11 2008I’m warning you now, this isn’t a funny blog.
I have a student who has trouble coming to school. He feels different and believes students from other classes are picking on him. He is at the age where he is beginning to notice he is not like the other children and he wonders why. Despite all this, he has a super bubbly personality and has learned so much this year. He excels in science and social studies.
So today we had a meeting. We are looking for ways to get him to school.
A flash of light must have popped over my head. Mom was saying how much he loved blogging in the classroom. And I thought, “Wow, we can blog with him right now even if he isn’t here!” So we did.
I had the kids write comments to him, letting him know how much they missed him and how he is such a wonderful classmate. (I didn’t tell them why he hasn’t been here – only that he wasn’t feeling good, which is the truth in a round about way.)
The comments they wrote to him were so sweet – a couple brought tears to my eyes. Now, I am just sitting back and waiting . . .
Mom knew to check the blog with him so he could read them.
Could it be this easy? Probably not, as there are other issues, but . . .
We’ll see tomorrow! I have high hopes

Wow! This is one of the most touching blogs I’ve read yet. Good positive reinforcement.
Wow, this is an excellent example of how blogging can create a strong sense of community in a class. I’m sure that that kid felt like he belonged as a result of this.
It sure was a different use of a blog than I had originally planned. But you gotta find that pivot point/motivator and go from there with ALL your kids
I think he does feel more accepted and cared about, and not just by his teachers.
I appreciate your post, thanks for sharing the post, i want to hear more about this in future.
